Klay Thompson didn’t start with the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night for the first time in years.
After weeks of lukewarm performances from Thompson, head coach Steve Kerr decided it was time that he became part of the second unit.
This was the right choice, as Thompson came to life during the game and scored 35 points and shot 7-of-13 from the three-point line.
After the game, he spoke with NBC Sports about what he learned being a bench player.
“I realized I might be more of a focal point through the offense, so that’s a fun role to play,” Thompson said.
“I just wanted to take it upon myself to prove to coach that I was going to respond like the champ I am,” he added.
“I learned some things tonight that I am gonna carry with myself throughout the whole season,” Thompson concluded.

It was very clear that Thompson had his confidence back during the game and he was playing like he used to.
He was sinking plenty of tough shots and was moving with speed, efficiency, and great energy.
He looked good leading the second unit but now some people are wondering if he will stay there for long.
Many times a player will fall into a rut because they lack confidence and belief in their skills.
Once they get that confidence back, they start playing very well again.
Maybe that is what’s about to happen with Thompson.
Now that he’s had an unquestionably great game again, Thompson could be in amazing shape.
If that’s the case, he’ll quickly be back in the starting five and the Warriors could earn quite a few impressive wins.
In many ways, Thursday night’s performance from Thompson could have been a turning point for Golden State’s season.
