Klay Thompson is in the final year of a five-year, $189.9 million contract that he signed with the Golden State Warriors back in 2019.
And he hasn’t been performing like his usual self so far this season, which has some people wondering what the Warriors will do in the summer.
They can sign him to a new contract extension, let him go, or trade him before the summer comes.
Speaking on The Lowe Post, NBA insider Zach Lowe said that the Warriors do not want to even contemplate trading away Thompson.
Lowe said there is only one “sacred cow” on the team, Stephen Curry, but Thompson comes pretty close to being one too.
Thompson just hasn’t looked right for most of 2023-24.
During his first 18 games, he has averaged just 15.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists.
Those numbers aren’t great compared to his previous seasons and his field goal percentage is particularly alarming: 40.7% compared to 43.6% last season.
That is the lowest number of his career, as is his three-point average of 36%.
Thompson has only played for the Warriors while in the NBA and the concept of him leaving for another team feels foreign and shocking to most fans.
According to Lowe, the front office feels the same way.
That means they will be signing Thompson to a new deal when this current one expires at the end of the season.
But what sort of salary will he receive?
If he can shake himself out of this slump, he could earn another max contract extension.
But if Thompson continues to struggle, the Warriors will have to grapple with the idea of paying one of their biggest stars less.
